Many good handicappers have pointed out the importance of workouts and some have come up with similar methods. Willie is the name of the handicapper who devised this particular method and who kept these stats on workouts so we call them Willies. Fortunately his name wasn't Richard.
Since all athletes must train no matter how much raw talent they have, workouts are a good place to start evaluating a horse
Race horses are professional athletes and they train like professional athletes. You can go to spring training camp and watch baseball players train. You can go to a race track in the morning and watch horses train or better yet, you can let someone else watch them for you and then report back to you. Of course, I'm talking about professional clockers. They time workouts and then print the results in The Daily Racing Form, other past performances and even at track web sites..
Willies are meant to be handicapping tools, not stand alone spot plays. When a horse with a Willie is about to run, look at the horse closely. Ask yourself if the horse's connections are likely to win. Is the trainer capable with a good win average? Or is the trainer one of those low percentage trainers who makes a living schmoozing owners out of training fees and winning once in a while when his/her luck turns? Ask the same of the jockey. Is this a jockey with a respectable win average? A 9% win average should be the least you ask of the jockey. If you keep stats on jockeys or use one of the past performance providers who now give you the stats for jockey/trainer teams, look to see if this is the jockey the trainer uses when he/she has a live horse.
That is most of the handicapping game. A good trainer and jockey with a horse that has shown some good recent speed and form in a superior workout. Add any other handicapping methods you like, but this is the foundation for all good handicapping and Willies are a superior way to rate workouts. We recommend using Willies withTrue Handicapping

We don't get those results every day, but if you look at the list of winners, you'll see that long shots aren't uncommon for Willies Alerts.
